1. General Care Principles
Before diving into specific materials, follow these universal rules to maintain the luster of your collection.
Keep it Dry
Moisture is the primary enemy of natural fibers. Always place your items in well-ventilated areas to prevent structural softening or biological growth.
Sunlight Moderation
While our fibers are sun-cured, prolonged exposure to direct, harsh sunlight can cause organic colors to fade and fibers to become brittle.
Gentle Cleaning
Avoid harsh chemicals. A soft, dry cloth or a soft-bristled brush is usually all you need to dislodge dust from intricate woven crevices.
2. Material-Specific Maintenance
Rattan & Bamboo
The Structural StalwartsThese are highly resilient materials but can accumulate dust deeply within their intricate and tight weaves.
- Deep Cleaning Use a vacuum with a brush attachment once a month to extract hidden dust without damaging the skin.
- Hydration In very dry climates (like heated indoor air in winter), rattan may crack. Occasionally wipe with a slightly damp cloth to restore flexibility.
Water Hyacinth
& Banana Stem
The Soft Absorbers
Due to their porous and thick nature, these natural fibers are significantly more sensitive to environmental humidity.
- Mold Prevention If the item feels damp, immediately move it to a breezy area, under the sun, or use a room dehumidifier.
- Spot Cleaning If a spill occurs, blot (don't rub) with a damp cloth and dry immediately with a hair dryer on a "cool" setting.
Mendong & Pandan
The Delicate ArtisansThese exceptionally fine weaves require a gentler touch to maintain their elegant form and vibrant natural dyes.
- Shape Retention Do not place heavy objects on top of Pandan boxes or Mendong bags for long periods to avoid deforming the delicate weave structure.
- Dusting Use a soft paintbrush to gently reach into the fine crevices of the weave without causing fraying.
3. Strategic Protection
Seasonal & Climate TipsWinter Care
In countries with central heating, the air becomes very dry. Keep fibers away from direct heat sources (radiators or fireplaces) to prevent severe shrinking and cracking.
Tropical Care
In high-humidity regions, use silica gel packets inside closed storage boxes, cabinets, or baskets to absorb excess moisture continuously.
"Sun-Bath" Ritual
Once every few months, give your items a 30-minute "sun-bath" in the morning (before 10 AM) to naturally eliminate any microscopic spores or trapped odors.
4. What to Do If Mold Appears?
Don't panic—organic materials can be restored if treated properly and promptly.
Isolate
Immediately move the item outdoors or to a highly ventilated area to prevent spores from spreading.
Brush
Use a dry, stiff brush to sweep away the surface mold. (Do this outdoors and wear a mask).
Sanitize
Wipe the affected area gently with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water.
Dry
Ensure the piece is bone-dry (preferably via sunlight) before bringing it back indoors.
